I ❤️ Census
This Tuesday will be my 13-year-old daughter’s first Australian Census.
Of course, she has been included in previous Censuses—but this will be the first one she is really aware of and involved in.
She is genuinely excited.
She loves a survey (I wonder where she gets that from? 😄), and she has already asked if she can be the person who collects everyone’s answers in our household.
It made me smile—but it also led to a great conversation about why the Census matters.
As an evaluation consultant, I spend a lot of time thinking about evidence and how we measure change. While many people see the Census as just another form to complete every five years, it is actually one of Australia’s most valuable sources of information about who we are and how our communities are changing.
The data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics helps inform decisions made by:
Australian, state and local governments planning services, infrastructure and investment.
Universities and researchers analysing social, economic and demographic trends
NGOs and community organisations identifying needs and advocating for resources
Businesses understanding workforce and market changes
Evaluation and monitoring practitioners (like me!) who use Census data to understand the broader context in which programs operate.
For example, Census data can help us understand who lives in a program location, population characteristics, education levels, employment patterns, caring responsibilities and indicators of socioeconomic disadvantage.
So while my daughter is excited about completing her first Census this week, I’m excited about something a little different—the collective evidence it will generate to help Australia understand itself and make better decisions over the next five years.
It is a powerful reminder that every response contributes to a much bigger picture.
